X. HENLEY'S PENNIES

What 2017 Taught Me

Updated: Jan 23, 2018

This year has been a HUGE transition for me. It is definitely one of those years on which I’ll look back and wonder how I did everything that I did. This year, I did a lot personally and professionally, and I’ve learned a lot, so I thought I’d share with you the top things that I learned this year.

#1: No really, no one controls your professional fate. This a full circle because this was actually my first Vlog last year. It’s is something I realized earlier in my career. I’m still amazed by how disempowered and trapped people allow themselves to feel. You have to own what you want to do professionally and personally, and go for it—you can achieve anything you want!

#2: Patience is a virtue. Things come at the time at which they are supposed to arrive. Because of that, you have to be patient. Take advantage of your day-to-day and learn everything you can from every experience—no matter how mundane or frustrating it may seem.

#3: Timing is everything. You have been patient, but you also have to be aware of when to act and when to be still. Sometimes we move too soon and it’s to our detriment because we weren’t ready; while other times, it’s time to jump or you’ll miss out on an amazing opportunity. Remember, don’t be afraid of the “what if’s".

#4: Contrary to what we believe, nothing is permanent. This year, I left my company for a small one—I’d been with them for over ten years. People were afraid for me, but I knew nothing was permanent, so I wasn’t afraid to jump. It was probably one of the best career decisions I’ve ever made. You can’t allow an idea of permanence hold you in a place—you’ll miss a great opportunity!

#5: Enjoy the ride. Sometimes we get so caught up in our goals, that we forget to enjoy the ride that we’re on trying to reach them. For example, the last few months of school were challenging this time around. I didn’t enjoy class as much as I should have, and I regret that. You, as I, chose these paths for a reason, so enjoy the scenery on the way there!

So, these are a few things that I learned this year. This year has been a wonderful challenge (yep, that’s a thing), and I’ve learned so much from my experiences and am looking forward to what 2018 has to bring. I hope that my year in review can be just as helpful for you as it was for me. If you want to watch the video for this blog, CLICK HERE.
